Q & A

I've been receiving so much wonderful feedback from you guys! Thank you! I love hearing from you.

Here are a few of the more frequently asked questions, with my answers below:

Will UNDER THE NEVER SKY become a movie?

I wish I could say a resounding yes!, but the answer is actually maybe. The film rights to the trilogy have been optioned by Warner Bros. studios, which basically means they are developing the story. I have to tell you that this still blows. my. mind. (Who do you think should play Aria and Perry? Leave a note in the comments below! It's always so interesting for me to see how readers view the characters.)

When will Book Two be released?

Early next year. I don't have a specific date yet, but I'll announce it here as soon as I do.

How do I get a signed and/or personalized copy of the book?

Contact Rakestraw Books at (925) 837-7337 with your information (payment, personalization, address) and they will ship it to you.

What are your favorite books?

Anything by Kristin Cashore. Anything my Laini Taylor. Anything by MT Anderson. I also love the His Dark Materials trilogy. I devour George RR Martin's books. I reread Persuasion by Jane Austen every year. I'm obsessed with The Count of Monte Cristo. I was supremely moved by Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I put Ender's Game into the hands of everyone who asks me for a thrilling book. I thought Incarceron was terrifically original and dark. The Hunger Games blew my mind. Across the Nightingale Floor swept me away. And Harry Potter... I could go on. Sigh. Books are awesome.

Who was harder/more fun to write, Aria or Perry?

Aria. I don't really know why. I just totally channeled Perry right from the beginning. At one point had the story all in his POV. I'm really glad I picked up Aria's voice, and she's as fun/difficult for me to write as Perry now. It just took me a little longer to find her.

How long did it take you to write UNDER THE NEVER SKY?

A year to develop and draft, and then six months to revise.

Will we get to see more of Roar in Book Two?

The answer is.... yes! You will see much more of Roar in Book Two. And you'll meet Liv. I'm going to stop there, so I don't get spoilery. (Lots of questions about Roar from you guys, I must say...)

Are you going on book tour, if so where?

I will be going on book tour over the next few weeks. For dates and locations, check here or here.

Is there an UNDER THE NEVER SKY playlist?

There certainly is, and it's right over here :)

  1. Why not Alex Pettyfer? He's got the whole blonde-handsome thing going on. ;) As for Aria I have absolutely no idea. If Under The Never Sky were to become movie, I hope that Warner Bros picks someone good.

I finished Under The Never Sky today and it kicked-butt. I love Perry! He's amazing. I love him.

Can't wait for Through The Ever Night! Oh, are you ever going to come sign in the UK?

    1. Thanks for your message, Sam! Alex Pettyfer does have the blonde-handsome thing down :) I'm so glad you liked NEVER SKY! I'm just starting to work on plans to come out there next year, right after EVER NIGHT publishes. Fingers crossed!

  2. I pictured a younger Alexander SkarsgÄrd (Eric from True blood) as Perry and Vanessa Marano (Bay from Switched at Birth). I have no idea why it's just what popped into my head while I read.

I read Under the Never Sky in one day and the second I was done I went online to see if it was a series or trilogy. I was going to be very upset if there was no sequel lol. Here's my 5 star review from my blog.

I might be coming to the event at Books of Wonder in NY in a few weeks so I can't wait to see you and the other authors!!!

  3. If and when Never Sky becomes a movie, what scene(s) from the book are you most looking forward to seeing? And who could you see playing the roles of Aria and Perry? :]

I can't wait to meet you when you come to Portland! So excited!

    1. Ohhh! Great question! The rooftop scenes are among my favorites, because I can picture them so clearly in my head. I'd love to see those! And I can't wait to meet you in Portland!

  4. I'm not sure about Aria and Perry but I think Liam Hemsworth would make a perfect Roar.

    1. I kinda feel like Liam Hemsworth would be perfect in just about anything ; ) Yes, he'd be a great Roar!

  5. I could see Perry played by Garrett Hedlund or Christopher Egan. They both have a sort of rugged quality that I really like about Perry, though I'm not sure if they could pass for 18. But still nice to look at. As for Aria...At first I kept thinking of Lucy Hale, cause she plays a character named Aria in the pretty little liars tv show. But I think Lily Collins could be a nice choice. Or maybe a newcomer. Im curious though, what will happen with Talon??? Will Perry ever "really" see him again?

    1. I've actually heard Garrett Hedlund before and I think that's a good choice! And your question about Talon will be answered in book two! <333

i've been thinking and Chris Zylka (Jake from secret circle) could be Perry, or Louis Hunter (Nick from Secret too) or even Josh Hutcherson, but i don't knoow, but i imagine Perry in an unique way, it's hard to pic someone to be him, and they all HAVE TO USE GREEN CONTACTS (: Aria is harder, but maybe hailee steinfeld if she was older or leighton meester MAYBE gooosh too hard, but would be perfect to watch this perfect book become a movie (: can't wait for the neews!

  7. I can't believe I've missed this for an entire MONTH (though to be honest, the authorities warned me off my Veronica Stalking when your neighbours started noticing my twice-daily visits).

ROOOOAAARRRR! (I swear, it's physically impossible for me to make a comment on an UTNS without roaring ROAR's name). I am so happy we'll be seeing more of him and especially Liv too! Next to me demanding a Roar spin-off, this is fantastic news :D

Also: Kristen Cashore? Laini Taylor? The Hunger Games? HARRY POTTER?! I think I love you *shy smile*

And good god, I need me some Aria and Perry on the big screen! I have my fingers, toes, tongue and ears crossed that it progresses to a movie. I'm terrible with fantasy casting, though I do like the sound of Garrett Hedlund mentioned above. He is a yummy, yummy man.

  8. My coworker and I always cast the characters in the books we read. I chose Chris Hemsworth as Perry (only because I keep seeing him with long hair in his movies and it's exactly how I imagine Perry's hair). My coworker chose Zac Efron as Perry because he's so dreamy. And we both agree on Shay Mitchell (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3762213/) as Aria.

  9. I think agree about Alex Pettyfer and Garret Hedlund they just both seem a little old. For Aria I think Shay Mitchell or Vanessa Marano.

I just finished the book today and loved it. I think it would make a great movie I just hope they pick good people and keep alot of details.

Can't wait for the next book and hopefully the movie!

  10. Oh and also for Roar I think maybe Taylor Laugtner or Robbie Amell

  11. I saw this book recommended for me on the kindle and BOY am i glad it did! I've been reading the book non stop all day and haven't stopped until i finished it! My mum even told me i was being "unsociable"! Anyway i totally agree with a comment above about how Garrett Hedlund should play Perry!

I think Aria should be played by Lucy Hale from the show Pretty Little Liars (she plays a character called Aria too, coincidence? I think not!)

Anyway, this book is totallly FREAKING AWESOME! 5 stars from me!!!!

  12. I hope if the movie is made the main characters aren't played by the run-of-the-mill Hollywood types (aka Liam Hemsworth, Alex Pettyfer, Zac Efron, etc....eeek!?!) It'd be great to see some unique and fresh(er) faces as Aria or Perry, even unknowns. They are pretty special characters :-)

That being said, I could see Aria as played by Felicity Jones or Emily Browning. I've always pictured Perry as a Max Irons, Eddie Redmayne or Charlie Hunnam type.

Wonderful book, I hope if a movie is made it'll do the book justice. Thanks!!!

  14. Out of all the above comments, and everyone I could think of, Alex Pettyfer is the best option for Perry. I actually pictured Perry looking similarly to Alex Pettyfer as I read.

However, Aria is really quite difficult isn't she? I think that she should be a played by a fresh face. Because if she IS played by someone already famous it will detract from Aria's uniqueness, which is what makes her so special and likeable. Also she should definitely be played by someone young and sweet. Otherwise it would just butcher the character.

Thank you SO much for these books Veronica. You have given me characters I love as well as if they were my own friends, and a whole new world to get lost in, even without the book in front of me. :) I don't know how I'll live until next January!

  15. Charlie Hunnam as Perry! He's all I can picture now when I think of Perry. :)

  16. I could see Kevin Zegers playing Perry. But he does need long shaggy hair! I could see Camilla Belle or Emmy Rossum as Aria. Or Q'Orianka Kilcher would bring a more exotic look to Aria. I think Sean Faris or Dave Franco would make a really good Roar. I'm dying to see this book turned into a movie, it totally deserves it! And honestly I wouldn't mind if they cast complete unknowns in the parts, I almost think it makes it even more believable when you can't picture that actor in anything else.

  17. I just finsished reading under the never sky and it was fantastic! i especially love perry, oh how i wish i would find someone who could sweep me off of my feet just as well he did for Aria. For Aria i am sure Lyndsy fonseca would be a good match, or even lily collins. Dont call me cocky, but i also think Lucy Hale. to me she has that aria sort of look to her, the dark hair and soft pale skin. For roar i think Kevin Zegers, he just reminds me about a person who would boast about his looks or Liam hemsworth (i think he would do well for either roar or perry). For perry, William Moseley, zac efron,Alex Pettyfer. whoever Perry is please make sure he is drop dead gorgeous and is a good actor, or else that would spoil the whole movie.

  18. I think Anna Kendrick or Lucy Hale as Aria and for Perry Garrett Hedlund

  19. Just finished Under The Never Sky and thought it was AMAZING!
    Top Fancasts in my opinions:
    Perry: Liam Hemsworth
    Garrett Hedlund
    Luke Grimes
*all would have that mysterious Perry look for some reason

    Aria: Isabelle Fuhrman
    Kaya Scodelario
    Odeya Rush
*whenever I pictured Aria I just imagined these three women!

    Roar: Dylan O'Brian
    Jeremy Irvine
*both have that dark sexy look and sarcastic look to them

Hope you like! And I would LOVE to know Veronica, what your fancast for Aria, Perry, and Roar are? :)
